Our Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics in Stuttgart offers a
Nr. 731: Conceptual process design of high-performance Ni-H2 batteries for future lunar and Mars missions
What to expect:
stability.
The potential of Ni-H2 batteries for future space missions (especially longterm missions to the Moon or Mars) is therefore to be investigated in more detail. The DLR Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics already has many years of experience in the areas of battery management systems, battery integration in space applications and alkaline electrolysis, whose electrochemical processes are akin to Ni-H2 batteries. The candidate is expected to leverage the existing expertise and conduct further research including:
- Development of concepts to increase the energy density of Ni-H2 batteries system as integrated solution
- Construction of prototypes and realisation of laboratory tests
- Definition and continuous improvement of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and a strategy of necessary development steps
- Development of concepts for the synergetic utilisation of Ni-H2 batteries, electrolysers and hydrogen storage systems for long-term space missions to the Moon or Mars
- Documentation and publication of achieved results
